Richard LeFrak

Richard S. LeFrak (born 1945 in New York City ) is an American businessman. He is the chairman and CEO of LeFrak Organization , a private, family-run company based in New York City that owns, develops, and manages real estate. LeFrak is one of the largest landowners and richest people in the New York metropolitan area . In mid-2019, his net worth was estimated at $ 6.3 billion .

Life

LeFrak was born in 1945 to a Jewish family in New York City, one of four children of Ethel Stone and real estate developer Samuel J. LeFraky. LeFrak received a bachelor's degree from Amherst College in 1967 . LeFrak also has a Juris Doctor from Columbia University . He started working for his family's real estate company, LeFrak, in 1968. In 1975 he was named president. After his father's death in 2003, he became CEO and Chairman. LeFrak is credited with leading the company's expansion and diversification outside of the New York area. In addition to New York, the company has also carried out larger projects in New Jersey , Los Angeles and Miami . Through the LeFrak organization, he also has interests in approximately 860 onshore oil and gas wells and mineral interests in 10 states.

In 1998, LeFrak received an honorary doctorate from Amherst College. LeFrak currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Prostate Cancer Foundation and serves on the Board of Trustees of the American Museum of Natural History . From 1995 to 2007 he was a board member of Smith & Wollensky . He was previously a member of the Board of Trustees of Amherst College and Trinity School . He also served on the board of the New York Banking Department , a regulatory agency , and a director of BankUnited in Florida , a private finance company.

LeFrak is the chairman of the Richard S. and Karen LeFrak Charitable Foundation , a private charity whose mission is to support nonprofit organizations.

Personal

He is married to the children's author Karin LeFrak (née Tucker). They live in New York and Long Island and have two sons (born in 1971 and 1973) who both work for his company.

The LeFrak family donated money for the re-election campaign in 2020 by Donald Trump .
