Smith & Wollensky is the name of several upscale American steakhouses with locations in New York City , Philadelphia , Houston , Columbus , Las Vegas , Miami , Chicago , Boston, and Washington, DC The first Smith & Wollensky Steakhouse was founded in 1977 by Alan Stillman and Ben Benson in opened a special building on 49th Street & 3rd Avenue. Many of the restaurants have a wooden facade in green and white colors. The individual Smith & Wollensky restaurants each offer slightly different menus .

history

According to the founder, Alan Stillman, no Mr. Smith or Mr. Wollensky was ever involved in the restaurant. Rather, he randomly chose two names from the Manhattan phone book: Smith and Wollensky. In the announcement for the opening in 1977, however, the names Charlie Smith and Ralph Wollensky were mentioned. Stillman later confessed that Charlie and Ralph were the names of his dogs.

Locations

new York

The parent company is located in a free-standing building in Midtown Manhattan , its green and white wooden facade has become the trademark of the restaurant chain. Part of this is Wollensky's Grill , a bar within the restaurant. Scenes from the film The Devil Wears Prada were filmed in this restaurant and its kitchen . The well-known Power Lunches with Warren Buffett took place here. The New York Smith & Wollensky also served as the meeting point for Christian Bale and Willem Dafoe in the film American Psycho .

When Alan Stillman sold the Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group, he kept the New York restaurant.

Chicago

With the same green and white facade as New York, this steakhouse is on the Chicago River and the Loop. It played a role in revitalizing the Chicago River North area and is in the neighborhood of Marina City and the House of Blues . It was used as a backdrop in the 2006 film Breaking Up With Obstacles .

Miami Beach

Located in a two-story oceanfront building, the S&W Miami is located on the extreme southern end of Miami Beach and offers views of the Miami skyline.

Washington, DC

The restaurant is located at 1112 19th Street NW, off the corner of 19th and L in the heart of downtown Washington, DC.

Las Vegas

This restaurant spans three floors in a building across from City Center on the Las Vegas Strip .

Philadelphia

The restaurant has two floors and is the main restaurant at the Philadelphia Rittenhouse Hotel . It offers a view of Rittenhouse Square .

Columbus

This restaurant opened in 2002 and is located in the Easton Town Center lifestyle community .

Houston

The location of this restaurant in the Highland Village is comparable to that in Columbus, as it was also built as part of a lifestyle community .

Boston

The restaurant was in the Arsenal of the First Cadet Corps, an 1891 fortress , and was the only Smith & Wollensky located on a National Historic Place until May 2018 . It is now south of the Financial District on the Fort Point Channel near the Boston Tea Party Museum.
