Richard Maxwell Burr (born June 2, 1964 in Renmark , Australia ) is a lieutenant general of the Australian Army and since July 2, 2018 its chief of staff .

From January 2015, Burr was already Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army, previously he served from January 17, 2013 on as one of five Deputy Commanders of the United States Army Pacific (USARPAC), a main command of the US Army (USA) based in Fort Shafter , Hawaii ; he was the first member of a foreign armed force to serve in an executive role in the US Army.

Education and career

Burr began his service in the Australian Armed Forces in 1985 as a platoon leader in the 8th / 9th Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment after studying at the Royal Military College Duntroon , Canberra , where he had a bachelor's and master's degree in military science .

For most of his career, Burr served in the Australian Special Forces ; from 2002 onwards he commanded Australian troops in Afghanistan , and in 2003 during Operation Falconer in Iraq .

In order to strengthen cooperation with its partners in the Pacific region, the US Army decided in 2012 to involve officers of allied forces in the management of their main commands; In February 2013, Burr was the first time a member of the Australian Army was appointed to one of five deputy positions of the USARPAC ( Deputy Commanding General - Operations ). Burr gave this position in January 2015 to Major General Gregory Bilton, also from Australia, and in turn took over that of Deputy Chief of Staff of the Australian Army.
