Richard M. Noyes

Richard Macy Noyes (born April 6, 1919 in Champaign , Illinois , † November 25, 1997 ) was an American physical chemist.

Noyes became Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oregon in 1959 , where he retired in 1984. His field of research was kinetics with an emphasis on the study of oscillating reactions . Richard J. Field, Endre Körös and Noyes developed a model in 1972, the so-called FKN mechanism or Oregonator, to describe the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction . In 1976, together with Kumud R. Sharma , he clarified the reaction mechanism of the Bray-Liebhafsky reaction .

Noyes has received numerous honors and awards. In 1955 he received the Guggenheim and in 1964 the Fulbright research grant. In 1970 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . In 1978 and 1979 he received the Alexander von Humboldt Senior American Scientist Award. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1977 and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1989. He published 190 scientific articles in various journals. He was also Associate Editor of the Journal of Physical Chemistry. This journal honored him with a commemorative publication on his 70th birthday.

He is the son of the chemist William A. Noyes .
