Richard Schwemer (born January 29, 1857 in Breslau ; † November 24, 1928 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German teacher and historian .

life and work

In 1876 Schwemer began studying law, but in 1878 he switched to history and literature at the universities of Breslau , Berlin , Marburg and Strasbourg . In 1882 he was with a dissertation on Innocenz III. and the German Church during the controversy for the throne from 1198 to 1203 .

From 1883 he was a teacher of German and history at the municipal high school in Frankfurt. After the grammar school split in 1897, he went to the Goethe grammar school , where he stayed until his retirement in 1922. He then taught as an honorary professor at the University of Frankfurt until his death .

Schwemer was from 1891 chairman of the historical department of the Free German Hochstift . His research focused on the development history of the German nation-state, from 1907 onwards, on behalf of the Frankfurt Historical Commission appointed in 1906, primarily on the history of the Free City of Frankfurt . His main work History of the Free City of Frankfurt , published in three volumes in 1910, 1912 and 1915/1918 . 1814 to 1866 is still an important work in Frankfurt's free urban era. For his services he received the municipal plaque in bronze from the city council .

The Institute for Urban History is keeping his estate .
