Richard Soyer

Richard Soyer (born November 18, 1955 in Villach ) is an Austrian lawyer , attorney , university lecturer , editor and non-fiction author . He lives and works in Vienna .

life and work

After graduating from the commercial academy , Soyer studied law at the universities of Vienna , Trieste and Göttingen . After completing his doctorate in 1981, he completed his judicial practice in Vienna the following year . In 1982/83 he was a contract assistant at the Institute for Constitutional and Administrative Law at the Vienna University of Economics and Business , and in 1983/84 he was a guest student at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna .

In 1986 Soyer passed the bar exam, and in 1993 he was admitted to the Austrian Legal Commission . In his first law firm, he was already committed to human rights issues and improved criminal procedural law , specializing in compliance , media criminal law and questions relating to the resumption of criminal proceedings . In 1995 he was represented in the Senate of the International Human Rights Tribunal , in 1996 he defended the LGBT activist Kurt Krickler against the lawsuits of bishops slandered as homosexual and was defeated. He also took on numerous pro bono cases in the 1990s .

In 1999 Soyer completed his habilitation at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz ; from 2005 to 2011 he held a professorship for criminal law at this university . Since the end of 2011 he has held a professorship for white-collar crime and compliance at the Johannes Kepler University Linz and is head of the corporate criminal law and criminal law practice department. He repeatedly participates in debates on current legal policy with articles and comments.

Soyer has been working for the journal juridikum since 2000 - as co-editor until 2002, as editor until 2009 and since then as a member of the scientific advisory board. Since 2002 he has been the editor of the Journal for Criminal Law, of which he has been co-editor since 2014. He was a spokesperson until 2017 and is still a board member of the Association of Austrian Criminal Defense Lawyers . In 2012 he was elected Chairman of the Criminal Law Commission of the Austrian Bar Association. Since 1992 Soyer has published a number of specialist books, particularly on criminal law and corporate criminal law. His journalistic collaboration with fellow lawyers Pleischl, Schumann, Schuppich and Stuefer is or was long-lasting.

In 2012, the committed criminal politician completed an EU research project on legal first aid for suspects during arrests . He initiates and accompanies numerous other research projects. Since 2018 he has been editor of the publication series of the Association of Austrian Criminal Defense Agents. Soyer's solid knowledge of international criminal law led to mandates in The Hague , New York and Central Asia. His representation of Dietrich Birnbacher in the context of a Carinthian corruption process attracted media attention .

In 2015 he advised Kazakhstan on the trial of Rachat Aliyev (who died in a prison cell in Austria) . In 2019 he was awarded an honorary professorship at the KAZGUU University, Astana, Kazakhstan.

Soyer has been leading the university research project he initiated "Corporate criminal law in global competition and human rights protection" since 2020. In this research project, corporate criminal law and the respective legal practice in globally operating East Asian economic powers (such as China, Japan, India and Indonesia) are examined legally and empirically with a focus on human rights.

Private

Soyer comes from a family of "Italian Carinthians", he has two brothers: one runs his parents' Hotel Savoy in Grado , the other works as a dermatologist in Brisbane . He has three children (Laura, born in 1986, Quentin, born in 1989 (from his first marriage) and Andrej, born in 2015)
