The Ried Chapel in Benningen is a Roman Catholic church in Benningen in the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria . This is located northwest of Benningen, directly on the edge of the Benninger Ried . The Ried Chapel is a listed building.

history

The reed chapel was originally built in 1218 after a miracle of hosts. The sacristy and parts of the nave were built as part of a renovation in 1586. In 1674 the reed chapel was renewed again. During this renovation, the nave was expanded and the tower was built.

Building description

The reed chapel has a nave with four window axes. On the southeast edge there is a square pilaster strip . The nave is vaulted with a barrel vault made of wood. This barrel vault is divided into arched and rectangular fields by strips. The entrance door around 1674 is decorated with stylized tendrils and has wrought iron hinges. The wooden gallery on the west side is kept very simple and has two staircases. The coat of arms are attached to the balustrade of the gallery ottobeuren abbey and Ottobeurer Abbot Benedict chert mounted. On the east side of the nave is the sacristy with a three-sided end. The tower is located between the sacristy and the nave on the north side of the reed chapel. The lower floors of the tower are four-sided, while the upper part of the tower is octagonal . The tower is covered with a copper-clad onion dome. On the south side of the Ried Chapel there is a chapel extension from the end of the 17th century.

The 17th century wooden ceiling of the Ried Chapel consists of 48 fields. They depict scenes of the Passion with allegorical and Old Testament representations. There are also images of the Trinity with cherubim and seraphim , the Assumption of Mary , of church fathers and apostles . To the east of the chapel is the altar, which was created around 1674. The cafeteria is clad with marbled wood, the antependium was painted on canvas by Arbogast I. Thalheimer in 1697 . To the right and left of the altar there are two doorways to the sacristy. They are each flanked by two columns on which the wooden busts of St. Benedict and St. Francis are. Both wooden busts date from the 17th century. The tabernacle is made of marbled, partly gilded wood and is closed off by a wrought iron grille from 1757.

The wooden pulpit dates from the late 17th century and is located on the north side of the Ried Chapel. The entrance to the pulpit is inside the nave. The pulpit is a polygonal basket with twisted columns. The four evangelists are depicted in the fields created by this structure . In the reed chapel there are still several wooden figures, including the figure of St. Leonhard from the first half of the 18th century and St. Theodor and Alexander from the second half of the 16th century.

Host miracle

The Benninger Host miracle from 1215/1216 is shown on eight panels in the Ried Chapel. The panels in the Ried Chapel are copies from 1774, the originals are in the Ottobeuren monastery. The paintings were created around 1600 by Johann Friedrich Sichelbein .
