Effects of the 1987 flood

The Riera de Portbou, also Ribera de Portbou , rises on the ridge between the Puig de Querroig and the Puig de Tarabaus 85 meters below the Coll de Tarabaus at 600 meters above sea level. It then flows east and flows into the Mediterranean at the port of Portbou. It is an ephemeral torrent that only seldom carries water a year, especially after heavy rain coming in from the Mediterranean. In October 1987, one of these heavy rains led to flooding in Portbou, while at the same time there was severe erosion in the headwaters. The effects of the storm in October 2005 were no longer quite as catastrophic as erosion-inhibiting measures had meanwhile been taken in the catchment area of the torrent.

Since the length of the river Riera de Portbou is only 5 kilometers, its sediment load is considerable. The sands and rubble on the beach of Portbou come from the catchment area of the Riera de Portbou and its tributaries.

The geological subsurface of the entire course of the river consists of weakly metamorphic, paleozoic shale rocks that belong to the Albères massif . They represent the easternmost section of the Variscan Orogen of the Pyrenees .

Between 1973 and 1975, the Pantà de Portbou, a reservoir was created on the upper reaches, which has ensured the drinking water supply for the municipality of Portbou ever since .

The lower course of the Riera de Portbou is canalised and built over from the station to its mouth.
