Ries is a village and a district in the Hals district of the Lower Bavarian city of Passau . The place is located on an elevation west of Hals and borders on the Hacklberg district in the west and south .

The landmark of Ries is the 26 meter high water tower with a good eight meters in diameter. It used to contain around 65 cubic meters of water. In 2004 the Stadtwerke Passau took the water tower out of operation. It was re-plastered in autumn 2008. The current, 1500 cubic meter underground elevated tank for the water supply of Ries, Hacklberg and Tiefenbach is located a little southwest of the water tower in Hacklberg. The granite coat of arms of the municipality of Hals on the facade of the water tower was created in 1961 by the Passau sculptor Otto Zirnbauer . There is also a war memorial in Ries .

For predominantly agricultural rural community Ries, then Riess , belonged besides the namesake municipality chief town nor the village Neureut and the wastelands Burgholz, Haslachhof, Oberöd and Unteröd. On October 14, 1921, the Bavarian Administrative Court decided to incorporate the municipality of Ries into Hals. This decision was implemented on August 9, 1922. In 1972 Ries came to Passau together with Markt Hals as part of the regional reform in Bavaria .

In 1901 the Ries volunteer fire brigade was founded. Since 1961, the water tower has served as a base for the fire brigade, which was already planned when the facility was built. The Stock Club Passau-Ries, a stick shooting club , has existed since January 28, 1973.
