The giant bellflower ( Campanula lactiflora ) is a plant from the genus of bellflowers ( Campanula ) in the family of the bell flower plants (Campanulaceae).

Stem leaves

The giant bellflower is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 40 to 100 (150) centimeters. The plant forms a rhizome . The stem is densely leafed. The stem leaves are short stalked to sessile, broadly ovate- lanceolate , double serrated and ciliate on the edge . The numerous flowers are stalked and arranged in double clusters. The branches are upright. The crown is broadly bell-shaped, divided up to half and 15 to 25 millimeters wide. The capsule fruit is upright, its pores are located just below the calyx.

The flowering period extends from June to July, sometimes until August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.

Occurrence

The giant bellflower occurs in north-east Turkey , in the Caucasus and in north-west Iran in damp forests, tall herbaceous meadows and subalpine meadows at altitudes of 600 to 2500 meters.

use

The giant bellflower is rarely used as an ornamental plant for perennial beds and the edges of trees. It has been in culture since 1814 at the latest. There are some varieties with a white, lavender blue or dark purple crown . The 'Pouffe' variety only reaches heights of 25 centimeters.
