Rina Lazo

Rina Lazo (born October 23, 1923 in Guatemala City , † November 1, 2019 in Mexico City ) was a Guatemalan painter and graphic artist active in Mexico . She lived in Coyoacan .

biography

Rina Lazo was the daughter of Arturo Lazo and Melanea Wasem. After completing school at the Colegio Alemán, she first studied in Guatemala at the Academia de Bellas Artes and then until 1954 as a scholarship holder of painting under Diego Rivera at the Mexican Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado "La Esmeralda" . She also studied at the Taller de Grafica Popular under Leopoldo Méndez , Pablo O'Higgins and under her future husband Arturo García Bustos graphics. Because of her talent, she asked Rivera in 1947 to assist him on some of his murals , calling her his "right arm" and his "best assistant". The collaboration with Rivera lasted until his death in 1957. She herself painted many murals in the style of the Mexican school in Mexico and in her home country. She also made a replica of Bonampak's Mayan murals for the Museo Nacional de Antropología in 1966 .

Lazo exhibited her pictures in Mexico, Guatemala, Europe and Korea in solo and group exhibitions. She was a member of various artists' associations, including in 1956 a leading member of the Frente Nacional de Artes Plásticas and in 1968 a leading member of the Tribuna de México . Later she was a board member of the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana .
