The Rio Potengi (also called Rio Potenji and Rio Grande ) is a river in Brazil .
It is the namesake of the state of Rio Grande do Norte and flows into its capital Natal into the South Atlantic .
Its name is derived from the Tupi language and means something like " shrimp river".
course
The Potengi rises in the village of Cerro Corá in the Sertão and flows from there essentially to the east. At São Paulo do Potengi it is dammed up by the Açude Campo Grande . Below Macaíba it widens to a confluence which gave it the Portuguese name Rio Grande ("big river"). Immediately at the mouth, the Potengi is spanned by the Newton-Navarro Bridge .

Importance as a traffic route
The river is used by numerous seagoing vessels on its lower course, as it provides the connection between the port of Natal and the Atlantic.
