history
Before the settlement by Europeans, the area that corresponds to today's municipality of São Gonçalo do Amarante was inhabited by the Indians of the Potiguaras . The area around the Rio Potengi was already settled in the 17th century, and legally it belonged to the Pernambuco captaincy . The Dutch controlled the northeast of Brazil with their colony of Dutch Brazil from 1630 to 1654. In 1645 there was the massacre of Cunhaú and Uruaçu by the Calvinist Dutch of the Catholic settlers. It was only after the defeat and withdrawal of the Dutch that there was a new settlement, mainly from Pernambuco.
In 1833 the structural development was so far that political-administrative autonomy could be sought. The place received the status of a Vila and could be spun off from Natal, to which it belonged until now. A cholera epidemic decimated almost the entire population, which led to it being downgraded to village level. In 1874 it again received city rights, lost them again after five years and became a northern district of Macaíba ( Distrito de Felipe Camarão ). On December 11, 1958, Law No. 2.323 spun off the municipality from Macaíba and raised it to the self-governing Município de São Gonçalo do Amarante .
The patron saint of the present day town, as well as other cities in Brazil, was Gonçalo de Amarante (1187–1262), a canonized Portuguese church patron.
