Macaíba , officially Portuguese Município de Macaíba , is a medium- sized town in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte . As of July 1, 2018, it had an estimated 79,743 inhabitants, called Macaibenses ( macaibenses )
history
The municipality emerged from the Vila de Coité , founded by Fabrício Gomes Pedroza in 1855 , named after the calabash tree that often occurs there . On October 27, 1877, parts of the territory from São Paulo do Potengi , São Gonçalo do Amarante and São Tomé were spun off and the Vila was granted city rights by law under the new name Município de Macaíba . However, the first administrator, Vicente de Andrade Lima, could not take office until 1882.
Today's city prefect has been Fernando Cunha Lima Bezerra of the Partido Social Democrático (PSD) since 2013 , who was re-elected in the local elections in 2016 with 48.96% of the votes for the term from 2017.
