Rio Tinto is a municipality ( freguesia ) and a city in Portugal . It is a northeastern suburb of Porto and is located in Gondomar County in the Porto District . Rio Tinto has a community area of 9.4 km² and 50,713 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
Nothing has survived from an old monastery today. In 1867 it was decided to merge the parishes of Águas Santas, Covêlo, Gondomar, São Pedro da Cova, Rio Tinto, Valbom, São Vicente de Alfena and Valongo to form the parish (Conselho) Rio Tinto. Rio Tinto received its town charter on August 30, 1995.
The Igreja Matriz de Rio Tinto church, built in 1768, and the Quinta de Campaínha chapel are particularly worth seeing.
