The Risnjak National Park ( ris means lynx in Croatian ) was declared a national park on September 15, 1959 , the total area is 6350 hectares . It is located in the western part of the Gorski kotar mountainous region in northwestern Croatia .

The highest peak is Veliki Risnjak at 1,528 m . It is about 15 km as the crow flies from the coast. From the summit, especially when the weather is clear, there is a view of the Kvarner Bay , the Učka Nature Park , the offshore islands and to the north to the Snežnik in Slovenia and the Karawanken. The Kupa rises in the national park and forms the border with Slovenia for about 100 km and flows into the Save at Sisak after 296 km .

Brown bears , wolves , lynxes , eagles and other protected animal species live in the wild in this wooded mountain range .

Due to the numerous hiking trails , extensive hikes can be undertaken in the national park. There is an entrance fee to visit the national park.
