The 1528 m high Veliki Risnjak (Great Risnjak) is the highest point in the Risnjak National Park in the Croatian Gorski Kotar landscape in the Primorje-Gorski kotar county northeast of Rijeka in the northern part of the Dinaric Mountains . After the 1534 m high Bjelolasica in the Velika Kapela he is the highest point in the county, but from the already in Slovenia situated snežnik clearly dominates. The name is derived from the Croatian name for the lynx , ris .

The Veliki Risnjak forms part of the karst plateau that stretches from Postojna in Slovenia to Delnice on the connection from Rijeka to Karlovac and between the Kupa river and the Adriatic coast ( Kvarner Bay ).
fauna and Flora
Among the fauna, the chamois ( Rupicapra rupicapra) stands out; since 1974 lynxes (Lynx lynx) have also been reintroduced . Risnjak is located in the area of beech and fir vegetation (Fagetum illyricum abietotosum) , which is replaced by subalpine beeches (Fagetum croaticum subalpinum) from an altitude of 1240 m .
Mountain sports
On the southern slope of the mountain is a mountain house, the Šloserov dom . The summit can be reached on foot in three hours from Cerni Lug and one hour from an unpaved road from Gornje Jelenje .
