Rita Barberá Nolla (born July 16, 1948 in Valencia , † November 23, 2016 in Madrid ) was a Spanish politician and mayor of Valencia.

Rita Barberá studied political science and economics at the University of Valencia and journalism in Madrid. In the 1970s she worked as a journalist and helped found the Alianza Popular (now Partido Popular , Spanish People's Party). In 1991 Barberá became mayor of Valencia and remained so in the following five elections (1995, 1999, 2003, 2007 and most recently 2011). In 2015 she was voted out of office as mayor, her successor is Joan Ribó from the Coalició Compromís . She then became a senator in the Spanish House of Lords ( Senado ).

During her tenure, the Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias was built, Valencia was the venue for the America's Cup and, since 2008, a Formula 1 race at the new Valencia Street Circuit .

Since September 2016, she has been officially investigated for suspected money laundering. Barberá denied the allegations. She resigned from the PP but refused to give up her seat in the Senate.

Rita Barberá died of a heart attack on November 23, 2016 in the Hotel Villa Real in Madrid .
