Rites of Passage (sometimes abbreviated to ROP in the album cover ) is the first live album by British pop / rock musician Roger Hodgson , the former founding member of the British rock band Supertramp . Ten years after the studio album “ Hai Hai ” it was released in 1997 and sold quite well in Germany and Switzerland  - otherwise sluggishly.

description

"Rites of Passage" is the result of the mini-tour in the summer of 1996, during which Hodgson gave several concerts in California with seven guest musicians, including Supertramp member John Helliwell and Roger's son Andrew Hodgson. The live album was recorded on August 2, 1996 at the last concert of the tour in the Miners Foundry , an event complex in Nevada City , California ( USA ) with several halls - for weddings, conferences and concerts, for example.

In contrast to the previous studio album "Hai Hai", on the live album "Rites of Passage" the saxophone typical of Supertramp, played by Helliwell, emerges a little more strongly, synthesizers have been banned and the music tends more towards progressive pop rock again. Style.

On "Rites of Passage" you can find the newly recorded songs "Take the Long Way Home", "The Logical Song" and "Give a Little Bit", three works from the famous Supertramp era, and "In Jeopardy" from the solo album " In the Eye of the Storm " (1984) five new (previously unreleased) songs by Roger Hodgson: "Every Trick in the Book", "Showdown", "Don't You Want to Get High?" "Red Lake" and "Time Waits for No One". “Showdown” became part of the album “ Open the Door ” three years later and “Don't You Want to Get High?” And “Time Waits for No One” are often counted among the best works on the live album by critics. In addition there is (the also new) "Melancholic", which was written by Andrew Hodgson, who plays the song on the piano and sings himself. Furthermore, the songs "No Colors" and "Smelly Feat", written by Mikail Graham, are part of the live album, which she plays on a guitar and sings herself.

The album cover shows the painting The Accolade ( The Accolade , 1901) by the English painter Edmund Blair Leighton (1853-1922).

Three years after "Rites of Passage" the studio album Open the Door was released .
