"Source" of the Algar |
The Río Algar , Catalan. Riu Algar , is a coastal river in the Spanish southeast, in the province of Alicante , north of the famous seaside resort of Benidorm . The river is only 12.2 km long and joins the Rio Guadalest at the Ermita de San Lorenzo (Saint Lawrence Chapel), about 4 km from its mouth in the Mediterranean Sea .
The river has its source on the southern flank of the Sierra del Ferrer. At the place El Algar the river forms several small and large waterfalls, a special tourist attraction. Visitors can also bathe in small natural and artificial reservoirs. This natural spectacle will be Fuentes del Algar , Catalan. Called Fonts de l'Algar , although it is not the actual source area.
In El Algar, the Rio Algar takes on the Rio Bolulla. Up to the estuary, most of the water is used to irrigate the agricultural areas, mainly orange and lemon plantations.
