River Heads is a location in Australia that is located on a peninsula on the east coast of Queensland . The next larger city, Hervey Bay, is 18 kilometers further north, Brisbane  is 229 kilometers south. In 2016, River Heads had 1,539 residents.

The peninsula on which River Heads lies is surrounded by the Great Sandy Strait and the mouths of the Susan River and Mary River . The Susan River in the west flows south of River Heads into the Mary River, which then flows into the sea. The approximately four kilometer long peninsula tapers towards the south-south-east. The place extends over the whole peninsula and stretches a little further north along the road to Hervey Bay.

Infrastructure

Tourists visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Fraser Island mostly use the ferries from River Heads that leave from the pier at the end of the peninsula.

The place has a grill station in Progress Park . There is a supermarket, fitness center, real estate office and shop to buy drinks. There is also a secure car park for vehicles for visitors to Fraser Island as well as for boaters. There is also a ramp for launching boats.

River Heads is known for its fishing area, where you can fish from rocks. Dolphins like the rare humpback dolphin and dugongs are very trusting there.

The place, which is on Great Sandy Strait, is subject to a strong tidal range on the coastline .
