The River Sherbourne [ ] is an English river in the metropolitan county of West Midlands . It runs through Coventry and is largely verdolt in the city area .

course

The source is in a field near Hawkes End in Allesley Parish (Fillongly Road, Wall Hill Road, Pikers Lane). Other source streams that flow in from a little further north are Pickford Brook and Bridle Brook . At Watery Lane in Corley you can see the river for the first time. It flows south, passes Spon End ( Vignoles Bridge ) and then enters the city center, where it is dumped on Inner Ring Road and Spon Street . Here it runs through the suburb of Whitley and comes back to light in a canal south of Coventry University . It runs through the grounds of the Charterhouse ( St Anne's Grove , Bisseley / Shortley), and further down the valley floor, largely parallel to the A 444 . About 200 m southeast of the junction of A 444 and Stonebridge Highway it flows into the River Sowe in Baginton . The Sowe itself soon flows into the River Avon , which drains into the Atlantic through the Severn and Bristol Channel .

Small tributaries are Guphill Brook , Radford Brook , Springfield brook (River Arthur), and Spittal Brook . Most of these brooks are in the urban area.

Surname

It is believed that the name Sherbourne comes from the Celtic "Scir Burna". The approximate meaning is "clear river".

history

The Sherbourne and its tributaries provided Coventry with fresh water for centuries, were used as a drive for numerous mills and served as natural sewers. A remnant of the former Coventry Landwehr has been preserved at the charter house by the brook . Since 1935 several events have been recorded, after which the Sherbourne in its upper reaches at Allesley was almost completely dried up.

The Coventry City Council is planning to reopen a verdolten section of the river, so that in the street The Burges in the center of the stream is visible again.
