Rivière Magpie is a river in the Minganie region in the Côte-Nord administrative region of the Canadian province of Québec .
River course
It flows south from the plateau of the Labrador Peninsula , near the provincial border with Newfoundland and Labrador , flows through the elongated lake Lac Magpie , and finally after 290 km (200 km according to other sources) reaches the north shore of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence . The estuary is east of the city of Sept-Îles and north of the western tip of the Anticosti Island. The Route 138 crosses the flow immediately before its mouth.
Hydropower plants
One kilometer from the mouth, the river is dammed by the Barrage de Magpie . The new Magpie hydropower plant ( ⊙ ), which went into operation in 2007, replaces an older system. It delivers an output of 40.6 MW. The average annual output is 185,000 MWh.
Recreational use
The river is a popular white water body for rafting , canoeing and kayaking .
Naming
"Magpie" is the English name for the titmouse .
