history

Tugurio Rivotorto

The name of the place derives from Rivo , a place named in the local Umbrian dialect for a stream that flows through the place near the sanctuary of the same name.

At the beginning of the 13th century, several episodes from the life of St. Francis occurred in Rivotorto . His father, Pietro di Bernardone, owned several estates in the area, and when he decided to give up the affluent life, he lived for a long time in a hut, a low, stone building covered with branches, ( Italian Tugurio ; German  poor accommodation ) alleged remains are now kept in the great church of Rivotorto.

When the postal connection between Florence and Rome was opened in the 19th century, the village housed a rest stop called Osteriola : around it and on State Road 75 , today's town center developed.
