Robert "Rob" Douglas Nicholson (born April 29, 1952 in Niagara Falls , Ontario ) is a Canadian politician of the Conservative Party of Canada . In 2015, he was Canadian Foreign Minister in Stephen Harper's cabinet ; in November of that year, he was replaced by Stéphane Dion under Justin Trudeau .

education

After attending school, Nicholson first studied at Queen's University in Kingston and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then completed his postgraduate studies of law at the Law School of the University of Windsor and was then a lawyer and member of the Law Society of Upper Canada .

politics

His national political career began as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada with the election to the Canadian lower house , in which he initially represented the constituency of Niagara Falls until 1993 . During this time he was from April 1989 to June 1993 Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General and from April 1989 to April 1990 at the same time Parliamentary Secretary to the leader of the government majority in the lower house. After that, Nicholson served from June 25 to November 3, 1993, Secretary of Science and Minister Plenipotentiary for Small Business in the 25th Cabinet , led by Prime Minister Kim Campbell . From 1997 he was a member of the Regional Council of the Niagara Peninsula and was confirmed in that office in both 2000 and 2003.

In 2004, Nicholson was re-elected as a candidate for the Conservative Party of Canada to the House of Commons and has since represented the constituency of Niagara Falls again . His last position was from January 2005 to February 2006 Parliamentary Director ( Chief Whip ) of the opposition .

From February 6, 2006 he was first Plenipotentiary Minister for Democratic Reforms and leader of the government group in the House of Commons, before he was appointed Minister of Justice and Attorney General in his cabinet on January 4, 2007 in a cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Stephen Harper . As part of a cabinet reshuffle, he moved to the post of Defense Minister on July 15, 2013. On February 9, 2015, he became Secretary of State, succeeding John Russell Baird . On November 4th of that year he was replaced by Stéphane Dion under Justin Trudeau .
