Robert Alexander (born October 17, 1863 in Baltimore , Maryland , † August 25, 1941 ) was an American lawyer and officer in the United States Army . He took part in the fighting during the Indian Wars , the Spanish-American War , the occupation of Cuba , the Filipino-American War and the border battles with Mexico .

Alexander joined the United States Army's 4th Infantry Division as a private in 1886 . The following year he was promoted to first sergeant of his company and in 1889 to second lieutenant . During the First World War he commanded the 77th Infantry Division in France as major general . In this capacity he took part in the Vesle - Aisne advance, the Meuse-Argonne offensive and the advance on Sedan .

He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in northern Virginia .
