Robert Barnes (also: Antonius Angelus, Anthonius Amarius, Antony Barnes ; * around 1495 near King's Lynn , County Norfolk; † July 30, 1540 in London ) was an English theologian of the Reformation and martyr.

Life

Barnes studied in Cambridge with John Bale in 1514 , in Leuven in 1523 , returned to Cambridge, where he received his doctorate in theology and then became prior of the Augustinian convent. Because of Reformation sermons he was interrogated in Cambridge and had to answer in February 1526 in London by Thomas Wolsey and several bishops of London, Rochester, Bath and St. Asaph in a heresy trial . Because he recanted, he escaped the death penalty but was incarcerated. In 1528 he fled to Antwerp , then to Germany, where he lived under an alias. So he got to know Martin Luther , Justus Jonas the Elder , Christoph Hegendorf and Johannes Aepinus .

In 1531 he returned to London at the invitation of Thomas Cromwell and became court chaplain to King Henry VIII , who sent him to Germany in 1534/35 to get the Lutherans to approve his divorce and marriage. He also came to Wittenberg, where he was supposed to keep Melanchthon from traveling to France and invited to England. In 1539 he was in Germany again. As a supporter of the marriage of Henry VIII with Anna von Kleve , he was accused after the failure of the connection, also attacked by Stephan Gardiner for his doctrine of justification, arrested and without trial as a heretic on July 30, 1540 with two other Protestants (William Jerome and Thomas Gerrard ) executed by burning. Three other Old Believers, Thomas Abel , Richard Fetherstone and Edward Powell, were hanged on the same day in Smithfield , London. His creed, with a foreword by Martin Luther, was translated into German and published several times.
