Christoph Hegendorf (* around 1500 in Leipzig ; † August 8, 1540 in Lüneburg ) was a humanistic poet, Lutheran theologian and lawyer.

Life

Hegendorf attended the St. Thomas School in Leipzig . He studied the basic subjects and theology in his hometown Leipzig. As a humanist he becomes a student of Petrus Mosellanus . He was in correspondence with Philipp Melanchthon , who recommended him to Posen . There Hegendorf worked for a while at the Lubrański Academy as a teacher of Greek. When Mosellanus died in 1524, he was appointed to the chair for Greek in Leipzig as his successor. Later he went to the Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) in the same capacity .

Apparently this activity did not satisfy him. He had received his doctorate in law in Frankfurt. Since he wanted practical work, he went to Lüneburg as the city councilor in 1537 . Apparently he had organizational talent. He was so celebrated that the University of Rostock entrusted him with the task of reforming higher education. When Hegendorf returned to Lüneburg, he was appointed superintendent of the city in 1539 . As soon as he had taken over this office, he was killed by the plague in 1540. He could no longer be theologically active. He has published classic editions and some Latin school comedies.
