Robert Chazan

Robert Chazan (born April 25, 1936 in Albany ) is an American medieval historian.

Life

Chazan studied history at Columbia University (MA, 1963) and received his PhD in 1967. He also trained as a rabbi at the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1962 .

Chazan taught history at Ohio State University in Columbus from 1967 to 1980 . From 1981 to 1987 he was Professor of History at Queens College , New York. Since 1987 he has been Professor of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at New York University .

Chazan publishes on Jewish history in the Middle Ages, the relationship of the Christian religion to Judaism and the history of the exegesis of Jewish religious writings and researches the development of historiography in the Middle Ages. He is a Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America and a member of the American Academy of Jewish Research, of which he was Chairman from 1995 to 2000.
