Robert D. Hales

Robert Dean Hales (born August 24, 1932 in New York City , New York - † October 1, 2017 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) was an Apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints until his death and a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles .

Life

Hales grew up in New York City as the youngest of three siblings. He graduated from the University of Utah . After completing his studies in 1954, he served as a pilot in the US Air Force for three and a half years . He then resumed his studies and attended Harvard University , where he received a Master of Business Administration in 1960 .

Hales was an active church member. Not surprisingly, on April 4, 1975, he was finally called to serve as Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles . In 1976 he moved to the First Quorum of the Seventy. He was also President of the England-London Mission from 1978 to 1979. From April 1985 to April 1994 he was Presiding Bishop of the Church. On April 2, 1994, Hales was called an Apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Ezra Taft Benson , entering the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, replacing the Apostle Marvin J. Ashton , who died in February 1994 .

Hales has been married since 1953 and has two sons.
