Robert Doll

Robert Doll (born January 16, 1923 in Munich ; † April 13, 2018 ) was a German physicist .

Live and act

After graduating from high school, Robert Doll studied physics at the TH Munich . He completed his studies in 1951 with the diploma thesis "Measurements and calculations for a sensitive needle galvanometer as well as the design and construction of the same". From 1953 he was a research assistant at the Herrsching branch of the Commission for Low Temperature Research of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , which was founded in 1946 by the then Academy President Walther Meißner . In 1958 Doll received his doctorate from Walther Meißner with the dissertation "Measurements of the gyromagnetic effect on macroscopic and microscopic superconducting lead balls". Together with his colleague Martin Näbauer († 1962) he succeeded in 1961 in experimental evidence of flux quantization , a prediction of the BCS theory of superconductivity . Independently - albeit a little later - William M. Fairbank and Bascom Deaver also succeeded . These experiments provided the first evidence of the quantization effect on a macroscopic scale, in this case the magnetic flux through a coil. At the same time the prediction of the BCS theory was proven that the superconductivity was carried by electron pairs . This technology can also be used to build magnetometers for particularly small magnetic fields, which are also used for quantum computers . For these research results, Doll and Näbauer received the Physics Prize of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences in 1961 .

After the Herrsching branch office was given up in 1967, the Commission for Low Temperature Research moved into a new building on the Garching university campus . Robert Doll worked there as Academic Director until his retirement in 1988, but continued to work scientifically on his previous projects.

In addition, Doll was involved in the development of high-precision measuring instruments and pumps for vacuum technology and cooling with liquid helium. He also dealt with the theory of superconductivity and the quantization of flux according to the Ginsburg-Landau theory .

In 1986 the Bavarian Academy of Sciences awarded him the "Medal Bene Merenti" in silver for his scientific merits.

In his spare time he played the double bass in a Munich orchestra ; he was also a passionate mountaineer .
