Robert Eberan von Eberhorst (born April 4, 1902 in Vienna ; † March 14, 1982 there ; also: von Eberan-Eberhorst ) was an Austrian designer who played a key role in the construction of the Auto Union Grand Prix racing cars before the Second World War .

Life

After school and studies at the Technical University of Vienna , Eberan von Eberhorst worked from 1922 to 1924 as a volunteer at Puch in Graz . In 1924 he switched to the elite factories in Brand-Erbisdorf in Saxony . In 1927 he went back to Vienna, where he worked as a self-employed driving instructor for two years.

In 1928 he took up a position as an assistant at the Institute for Automotive Engineering at the Technical University of Dresden for five years . His tasks included: Investigating the mass balance and balancing of rotating bodies as well as vibration phenomena on chassis.

From June 1, 1933, Eberan von Eberhorst was a test engineer at Auto Union AG in Chemnitz, and from July 1, 1937, head of the Auto Union racing department in Zwickau . After Ferdinand Porsche's departure as a cooperation partner in June 1933, he largely designed the 3-liter twelve-cylinder racing car, the Auto Union racing car type D (1938/39).

In 1940 Eberan von Eberhorst received his doctorate on “Filling the supercharger engine” and in 1941 became a full professor at the Dresden Technical University at the chair for automotive engineering and light engine technology. Until the beginning of 1945 he was a leading member of the "Consumption Reduction" research group of the Motor Vehicle Commission.

At Porsche he was involved in the development of the Cisitalia racing car in 1947 . In 1949 Eberan von Eberhorst went to England and was first chief engineer at English Racing Automobiles (ERA) and then at Aston Martin .

From 1953 to 1956 Eberan von Eberhorst was Managing Director of Auto Union GmbH for the area of ​​technical development. In addition, from October 1958 to June 1959 he was President of the Supreme National Sports Commission for Motor Racing in Germany .

In the last nine years of his professional life, Eberan von Eberhorst worked scientifically from 1956 at the Batelle Institute in Frankfurt am Main and from 1960 at the Technical University in Vienna as head of the Institute for Internal Combustion Engines and Automotive Engineering.
