Robert Foster (* 1949 in Brooklyn , New York ) is an American English professor and writer .

Life

Robert Foster was born in Brooklyn, New York . He studied English and Medieval Studies at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . Dr. Foster worked as an assistant professor of English at Rutgers College , New Brunswick , New Jersey . He became known to a wider audience through his Middle-earth lexicon, which explains the terms around the stories of the English fantasy author J. R. R. Tolkien , which are related to his world Middle-earth . He served as an advisor to the Tolkien Society of America. The creation of the lexicon was a result of his occupation there with the etymology of the names in Tolkien's books.

The Great Middle-earth Lexicon gives an overview of the names of the locations, people and terms that were published in the books The Lord of the Rings , The Hobbit and The Silmarillion on the mythology of Middle-earth.
