Robert Gavron, Baron Gavron , CBE (born September 13, 1930 in London ; † February 7, 2015 ibid) was a British lawyer , politician , millionaire and philanthropist .

Career

Bob Gavron was the son of Leah and Nathan Gavron. He attended Leighton Park School in Reading and St Peter's College in Oxford . He then became a barrister and was admitted to the Middle Temple Bar in London in 1955 . In the same year he married his first wife Hannah Fyvel († 1965).

In 1964 he founded the St Ives Group and was its chairman from 1964 to 1993. From 1975 to 1987 he was director of Octopus Publishing plc. and from 1981 to 1992 from Electra Management plc. ; from 1983 he was the owner (proprietor) of The Carcanet Press Ltd. and from 1982 chairman of the Folio Society . From 1996 to 1998 he headed the National Gallery Co Ltd (initially under the name National Gallery Publications Ltd ) and from 1997 to 2000 the Guardian Media Group plc .

Gavron was chairman of the Open College of the Arts from 1991 to 1996 and one of the directors of the Royal Opera House from 1992 to 1998 . He was trustee of the National Gallery from 1994 to 2001, trustee of the Scott Trust from 1997 to 2000, and trustee of the Paul Hamlyn Foundation from 1987 to 2005 . He was Governor of the London School of Economics from 1997 and was chairman of his own charitable trust. He was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1996 .

Gavron was, along with his second wife, Nicky Gavron (née Nicolette Coates), active in the Labor Party . Nicky Gavron was a Local Authority Councilor for many years and was then elected to the London Assembly . She was Deputy Mayor of London from 2004 to 2008 . The marriage ended in divorce in 1987. In 1989 he married Katharine Gardiner (née Macnair) for the third time.

Bob Gavron has sponsored the Labor Leader's Office Fund , which was managed by Lord Levy to support Tony Blair's private office ahead of the 1997 general election . On August 6, 1999, he was named Life Peer Baron Gavron of Highgate in the Borough of Camden . His daughter is the film director Sarah Gavron , the actor Rafi Gavron is one of his grandchildren.
