Robert Giffen

Sir Robert Giffen (born July 22, 1837 in Strathaven , Lanarkshire , Scotland , † April 12, 1910 in Fort Augustus , Highland , Scotland) was a British statistician and economist . He founded the Giffen paradox , a price effect from microeconomics.

Life

Giffen was born in Strathaven, Lanarkshire . In Glasgow he attended courses at the University of Glasgow and showed an early interest in journalism. Together with his brother, he wrote articles and poems anonymously for local newspapers. In 1960 he became a reporter and editor for the Stirling Journal.

In 1862 he went to London and worked for the Globe. He assisted John Morley, who was editing the Fortnightly Review at the time. In 1868 he became Walter Bagehot 's assistant at the Economist. He joined the Statistical Society in 1867 after earning a reputation as a financial writer for the Globe, Fortnightly Review, Economist, and the Spectator .

After he was offered the position of Chief of the Statistical Department and Comptroller of Corn Returns in 1876 , his activities shifted from journalism to statistics.

In 1892 Giffen was elected as a member (" Fellow ") in the Royal Society . In 1891 he was accepted as a Companion (CB) in the Bath Order and in 1895 knighted as Knight Commander (KCB) of the same order, which is why he continued to use the suffix "Sir". In 1894 he was awarded the Guy Medal in gold by the Royal Statistical Society for his work .

Giffen died in Fort Augustus in 1910 . He was buried in his native Strathaven.
