General Anderson

Robert Houston Anderson , (born October 1, 1835 in Savannah , Georgia , † February 8, 1888 ibid), was a Brigadier General of the Confederate States of America in the Civil War .

Life

Anderson successfully completed his training at the Military Academy in West Point in 1857 and served first in the US state of New York , then at Fort Walla Walla as a lieutenant in the infantry . As the crisis between the Northern and Southern states worsened, he said goodbye to the US Army and moved to the Confederate Army camp , where he was promoted to major in September 1861 and as adjutant to William Henry Talbot Walker , Major General of the Georgia Troops, took on more administrative tasks.

After a brief deployment at Fort McAllister , Anderson was transferred to the front in January 1863 and at the same time promoted to Colonel of the 5th Georgia Cavalry, which he led as Brigadier General from July 26, 1864. In the meantime requested by Tennessee , he served under Joseph Wheeler in the Atlanta campaign . During one of Wheeler's operations near Franklin , Tennessee, division commander , Brigadier General John Herbert Kelly, was killed and Anderson was temporarily named division commander.

After the fall of Atlanta he fought on the march to sea and during the Carolina Campaign and was eventually captured along with the army of General Joseph E. Johnston . After the war ended, Anderson moved back to Savannah, where he served as chief of police from 1867 until his death in 1888.
