Robert Hutchison, 1st Baron Hutchison of Montrose PC KCMG CB DSO (born September 5, 1873 , † June 13, 1950 ) was a British major general and politician of the Liberal Party , who was Paymaster General between 1935 and 1938 .

Life

Hutchison began his military career in 1900 as an officer in the 7th Dragoon Guards and took part in the Second Boer War between 1900 and 1902 . In 1905 he was promoted to captain in the 11th Hussars and served as a major in the 4th Dragoon Guards from 1912 . For his military services in World War II , he was Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in 1915 and Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1918 . In 1919 he was made Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG) and from then on carried the suffix "Sir".

In the general election of November 15, 1922 , Hutchison was elected as a candidate for the Liberal Party for the first time to the House of Commons and initially represented the constituency of Kirkcaldy until December 6, 1923 .

Hutchison, who was promoted to major general in 1923 , was re-elected to the House of Commons in the general election of October 29, 1924 and represented the constituency of Montrose until he resigned on June 7, 1932 . During his membership in parliament he was first Parliamentary Secretary ( Whip ) from 1924 to 1926 and then as successor to Godfrey Collins from 1926 until his replacement by Archibald Sinclair in 1930 Chief Whip and thus Parliamentary Chief Executive of the parliamentary group of the Liberal Party in the lower house.

After leaving the House of Commons, Hutchison was raised to hereditary nobility on June 30, 1932 as Baron Hutchison of Montrose , of Kirkcaldy in the County of Fife, and was thus a member of the House of Lords until his death .

On June 7, 1935 he was appointed by Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin as Paymaster General (Paymaster General) in the National Government and held the office under Baldwin's successor Neville Chamberlain until 1938. In 1937 he was appointed a member of the Privy Council (PC).

Since his two marriages remained childless, the title of Baron Hutchison of Montrose expired on his death.
