Robert Joffrey

Robert Joffrey (* 24. December 1930 in Seattle , Washington as Abdullah Jaffa Bey Khan ; † 25. March 1988 in New York City , New York ) was an American dancer and choreographer of Afghan descent.

Life

Robert Joffrey was born in Seattle on Christmas Eve 1930 to an Afghan Pashtun and an Italian. He studied dance in New York City and began dancing with Roland Petit in 1949 . Joffrey co-founded the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago in 1956 ; among other things, Ann Reinking received lessons from him. He received the Capezio Dance Award in 1974 and the Handel Medallion in 1981 .

Joffrey died of AIDS in New York City in 1988 at the age of 57 . He was buried in the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine . In 2000 he was inducted into the National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame .
