Robert Kidston

Robert Kidston (born June 29, 1852 in Bishopston , Renfrewshire , Scotland , † July 13, 1924 in Gilfach Goch , Glamorganshire , Wales ) was a Scottish paleobotanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Kidst. "

Live and act

Kidston was the son of a wealthy Glasgow businessman. He was a bank clerk in Glasgow, but also worked intensively on botany. In 1878 he became secretary of the local natural history society. When his bank closed in the same year and he also inherited a significant inheritance following the death of his father, he became a private scholar and studied botany at the University of Edinburgh with Hutton Balfour, graduating with top marks in 1880. He married in 1898 (the marriage resulted in two Daughters) and lived in Stirling . From 1880 he volunteered for the British Geological Survey . Kidston was considered one of the most influential paleobotanists of his time in Britain and Europe.

He dedicated himself to the fossil plants from the Carboniferous and Devonian , including from the Scottish Rhynie Chert . From 1883 to 1886 he cataloged the Paleozoic fossil plants in the Natural History Museum .

Kidston was elected a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1886 and the Royal Society in 1902 . In 1916 he was awarded the Murchison Medal of the Geological Society of London .
