biography

2001 to 2007: Two ATP finals and quarter finals at Wimbledon

Mayer joined the professional circus in 2001. He made his breakthrough three years later when he was the only German to survive the first round of the 2003 Australian Open ; in round two he was eliminated against the Argentine David Nalbandian . In 2004, he also reached the second round of the French Open by defeating the number 14 in the world, Fernando González . At the Estoril Open in April 2004 he made it to the semifinals of an ATP tournament for the first time .

At the Wimbledon tournament in 2004, he advanced to the quarterfinals with victories over number 3 seeded Argentine Guillermo Coria and Wayne Ferreira . This improved him to a place among the top 50 in the ATP world rankings .

At the IDEA Prokom Open in Sopot in August 2005 he was close to his first victory at an ATP tournament, but he lost the final against Gaël Monfils in three sets. In 2006 he reached the final of Sopot again and this time lost to Nikolai Dawydenko . In the second round of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle , he defeated Dawydenko in 2007, but was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Marcos Baghdatis .

Mayer trains in the tennis base of the Bavarian Tennis Association in Oberhaching near Munich. At the end of the 2005 summer season, he separated from his long-time coach Ulf Fischer and then worked temporarily with Stefan Eriksson . together and was then temporarily trained by Markus Wislsperger.

2008 to 2009: Long break and comeback in the top 100

Mayer ended his tennis year in mid-May 2008: After an operation on his left index finger, he took a seven-month break from the tournament in order to regain his enthusiasm for tennis. Therefore, he slipped to 409th place in the ATP world rankings.

In 2009 he celebrated great success on the ATP Challenger Tour . There he won the tournaments in Bangkok , Karlsruhe and was in the finals in Nouméa , Sofia and Istanbul . At the end of the year he was 61st in the ATP world rankings.

2010 to 2013: First title, Wimbledon quarter-finals and top 20 in the world

In 2010 he was defeated in the semifinals in Hamburg , a tournament of the ATP World Tour 500 , to the eventual winner Andrei Golubew . At the Grand Slam tournaments in Melbourne (against Juan Martín del Potro ) and Wimbledon (against Lu Yen-hsun ) he lost each in the third round. He also won two hard court tournaments on the ATP Challenger Tour ( Nouméa and Sunrise ) in the first quarter . After beating Kevin Anderson and Michail Juschny, he reached the third round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters . There he failed in two sentences against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga . Mayer played his next tournament in Stockholm . After victories over Feliciano López and world number five Robin Söderling , he reached an ATP final for the first time in over four years. There he was defeated by the top seeded Roger Federer . He finished the season with a match record of 23:18 and earned $ 513,955 in prize money.

He started 2011 with a quarter-final and a semi-final appearance in Brisbane and Sydney . At the first Grand Slam tournament of the year in Melbourne , he was able to defeat Nikolai Dawydenko in four sets, before he also failed in the second round in four sets to Kei Nishikori . At the indoor tournament in Zagreb Mayer reached his second semi-final of the season, in which he was defeated by fellow countryman Michael Berrer in two sets. In Dubai he played his way to the quarterfinals, which he lost in two sets against eventual tournament winner Novak Đoković . After a first round defeat in Indian Wells , Mayer reached the round of 16 at the Miami Masters , where he failed in the tie-break of the decisive set against Tomáš Berdych . In April 2011 he played his way to the final in Munich , but like five years earlier in Sopot, he had to admit defeat to Nikolai Dawydenko in three sets. Two days later he played his first round match against Viktor Troicki in Madrid , which he won in three sets, in the second round he was eliminated by the later semi-finalist Thomaz Bellucci . Mayer was able to take his good form into the Masters tournament in Rome and reach the quarter-finals. There he collapsed completely after winning the first set against Andy Murray and was clearly defeated in three sets in the end. Mayer was then the decisive player in Germany on the way to the fifth German triumph at the World Team Cup in Düsseldorf - he won all of his singles. In the world rankings he moved into the top 20 for the first time. At the following French Open , he lost in the second round after winning the first set against Alejandro Falla . In Halle he reached the quarter-finals, which he lost to Gaël Monfils. In Hamburg he was eliminated in the quarterfinals in two close sets against Nicolás Almagro . After reaching the third round at the US Open for the first time, Mayer was able to win his first ATP title at the last clay court tournament of the season in Bucharest in the fifth attempt with a smooth final victory over Pablo Andújar . In the round of 16 in Shanghai , he beat the then world number two Rafael Nadal in two sets. In the middle of the year he achieved his best world ranking so far with rank 18.

In 2012 Mayer reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon for the second time after 2004 with a four-set win over Richard Gasquet . Then Mayer reached the quarter-finals at Hamburg's Rothenbaum , where he had to admit defeat to Tommy Haas in two sets. Mayer decided not to attend the Olympic Games in order to concentrate on the North American hard court tournaments. For this he was heavily criticized in the media. The US Open was for Mayer already with the first round ends. He gave up the match against the American Jack Sock in the third set when the score was 3: 6, 2: 6, 2: 3. In the Davis Cup , Mayer appeared as a top player for the German team in the relegation game against Australia . With two clear three-set wins against Lleyton Hewitt and Bernard Tomic , he played a major role in the 3-2 success and the associated relegation in the world group. The highlight in October was the semi-finals at the China Open in Beijing. He was defeated by the world number two Novak Đoković with 1: 6, 4: 6.

In 2013 he reached the round of 16 at the Masters in Monte-Carlo and the semi-finals in Bucharest the following week . Against Guillermo García-López Mayer lost 4: 6, 6: 4, 3: 6. During a detour on the Challenger Tour , he won the tournament in Braunschweig against Jiří Veselý in July , after having been defeated in three sets against Novak Đoković in Wimbledon. At the next clay court tournament in Hamburg , Mayer made it to the quarter-finals. There he was defeated by Roger Federer 6: 7 4 , 6: 4, 5: 7. In Metz he lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semifinals . He then defeated David Ferrer , who was fourth at the time, on his way to the quarter-finals at the Masters in Shanghai , before failing again at Tsonga. At the end of the year, Florian Mayer was in 40th place in the world rankings.

2014 to 2015: Injury misery and comeback attempt

At the beginning of 2014 he reached the semi-finals against Gaël Monfils in Doha , beating Andy Murray on the way there . Mayer celebrated the best result at the Australian Open in 2014 when he made it to the round of 16, in which David Ferrer was eliminated. He had to give up his last game of the season on the tour in March in Miami due to an injury. At that time he was number 30 in the world rankings. Edema in the pubic bone was found to be particularly persistent with conservative treatment.

He made his comeback on the ATP World Tour 2015 in Monte Carlo in April 2015 .

2016 to 2017: Biggest title and finals in Germany

At the MercedesCup , the grass tournament in Stuttgart in mid-June, Mayer reached the quarter-finals as a qualifier, in which he lost 6: 7 (2: 7), 6: 7 (1: 7) against top seeded Roger Federer. In the following week he was able to compete in the main field of the Gerry Weber Open due to the protected ranking regulation (PR) for long-injured players . There he defeated Dominic Thiem , number seven in the world rankings, in the semifinals , 6: 3, 6: 4. He achieved the greatest success of his career on June 19, 2016 in the final against the favored Alexander Zverev , who had defeated Federer in the semifinals. Mayer won 6: 2, 5: 7, 6: 3 against the 13 years younger opponent. Thanks to the good performance at the two German grass tournaments, Mayer improved from 226 to 80 in the world rankings within two weeks. Before the end of the year, he also succeeded in two Challengers, so that he could finish the year in 50th place. 2017 started for Mayer with some early defeats, for example at the Australian Open and the French Open . In Wimbledon he won at least the opening game against Viktor Troicki before losing to Marin Čilić . He could not repeat his coup of the previous year in Halle , in the quarterfinals this time Roger Federer was the last stop. But he was able to surprise at the other German tournament of the 500 series when he moved into the final of the German Tennis Championships in Hamburg. Here he lost to Leonardo Mayer in three sets in a match between two players outside the top 100 . At the last Grand Slam in New York , Čilić was again the end of the line. At the end of the year he was in 69th place.

2018: last season and retirement

As in the previous year, Mayer started weakly and lost in the first round of the first nine World Tour tournaments of the year. In April he announced that he would end his career after the US Open 2018 . He only won a match in Stuttgart and Halle , so that he steadily dropped in the ranking. In all Grand Slams of the year he did not get past the start, including his last appearance as a professional tennis player when he lost to Borna Ćorić in four sets in New York .

Career as a club player

With TK Kurhaus Aachen , for which he played since 2008, Mayer won the first tennis Bundesliga in 2008 , 2009 , 2011 , 2012 and 2013 .
