Robert L. Coffman

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert L. Coffman (* approx. 1948 ) is an immunologist .

Coffman earned a bachelor's degree from Indiana University in Bloomington , Indiana and a Ph.D. at the University of California, San Diego . He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University Medical School . From 1981 Coffman worked at the DNAX Research Institute , a private research institute in Palo Alto , California , most recently as a research group leader (Distinguished Research Fellow) . Since 2000, Coffman has served as the vice president and chief scientific officer of the biotechnology company Dynavax Technologies in Berkeley , California. Coffman also works for the Baylor Research Institute in Dallas , Texas .

Coffman was able to make significant contributions to research into the immune system, in particular to the regulation of the immune response in allergies and infectious diseases . Together with Tim Mosmann , he discovered that there are T H 1 and T H 2 T helper cells that play a key role in regulating the immune response. More recent studies deal with the innate immune response , its influence on the adaptive immune response and the possibilities of using certain substances to inhibit or stimulate certain parts of the innate immune response in order to treat allergies and autoimmune diseases . At Dynavax , he introduced new therapeutics for asthma , autoimmune diseases, hepatitis C and cancer as well as a new vaccine against hepatitis B for clinical trials .

Thomson Reuters counts Coffman among the favorites for a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine ( Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates ). In 1997 he received the William B. Coley Award (together with Tim R. Mosmann and Stuart F. Schlossman ) . In 2006 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences .
