Robert Latzel (born October 28, 1845 in Sörgsdorf , † December 15, 1919 in Klagenfurt ) was an Austrian entomologist who published a series of pioneering works on millipedes ( myriapods : double-headed , centipedes and relatives). His collection of millipede preparations, housed today in the Natural History Museum Vienna , includes many type specimens . His monographs on the myriapods of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy were the first comprehensive treatment of the centipedes and bipedes in this large region. He described almost 130 taxa of millipedes (1 genus , 2 subgenera, 69 species and 56 varieties ) and over 40 centipede groups (2 genera, 29 species and 12 varieties), as well as four taxa of puntipods and pygmy paws, respectively . His work on bipedes used the gonopodia for the first time to classify and differentiate species from centipedes.
