Robert Merz (born November 25, 1887 in Vienna , † August 30, 1914 in Poturzyn ) was an Austrian football player. The striker mostly played in the position of legal liaison and took part with the Austrian national soccer team in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm.
Career
Robert Merz began his career with the German young team Währing , which merged in 1902 with the Hernalser football and athletic club Vorwärts to form the German sports club and in 1904 joined the heavy athletics club Wiener Sportvereinigung, a predecessor of today's Vienna sports club , as a football section . With the sports association, where he and Willy Schmieger formed an unstoppable striker duo, Merz won the Challenge Cup in 1905 with a 2-1 final victory over Magyar AC from Budapest . In 1907 Robert Merz moved to the Vltava to DFC Prague , from where he was also appointed to the national team for the first time.
He made his debut in the friendly against England on June 6, 1908, which was played on the occasion of the anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph . He demonstrated his accuracy in the team for the first time in a duel against arch rivals Hungary on May 7, 1911, when he contributed two goals to the 3-1 victory. At the Olympic Games in 1912 Merz was in four of the five Austrian games and reached the then disappointing second place in the consolation round with the team under coach Jimmy Hogan .
In total, Merz made 13 appearances in Austria's senior national team. After the match against Hungary on May 3, 1914 (2-0), his football career came to an abrupt end. As a frontline soldier in World War I , he was one of the first football players to be shot in the heart on August 30, 1914 in a battle near Poturzyn and was buried by his troops at the battlefield.
