Emotion-theoretical models

Plutchik's wheel of emotions

In 1980, Plutchik introduced an emotion theory. This assumes that emotions have a genetic basis and control the adaptation of behavior. He names eight basic emotions and summarizes them in emotional theory models. This is on the one hand the three-dimensional cone ( cone-shaped model ) and on the other hand the two-dimensional wheel ( wheel of emotions ) with the same content, but as a top view of the dismantled cone.

Cone of Emotions

The eight emotions can be arranged on a cone and can be graded based on their intensity. Towards the top, the emotions are no longer as intense and are therefore no longer so easily distinguishable. Similar emotions are adjacent. Opposing emotions are opposing emotions; adjacent emotions are similar. This results in the opposing pairs of joy - sadness, expectation - surprise, aversion - trust, resentment - fear. All other emotions are combinations of the primary emotions, here primary dyads (similar emotions mix) and secondary dyads (dissimilar, not directly adjacent emotions mix) arise.
