from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert Salmon (* 1775 in Whitehaven , † 1848 / 51 ) was a British painter , who especially in America for his ship portraits became known. He was one of the main influences of the famous painter Fitz Hugh Lane from the Hudson River School .

life and work

Robert Salmon was born in Whitehaven , County Cumberland (now part of Cumbria ) in 1775 . He lived in Liverpool from 1806 to 1811 , from 1811 to 1822 in Greenock in western Scotland and from 1822 to 1825 again in Liverpool. In 1828 he moved to the United States and settled in Boston , where he quickly became one of the most famous marine painters. In 1842 he returned to England. Various information is available about the year the artist died; while some sources give the year 1845, according to Matthew Baigell he died in either 1848 or 1851.

Salmon's painting mainly focused on sea and harbor scenes. His style was very much based on Dutch marine painting of the 17th century with a flat horizon and light effects. The influence of Giovanni Antonio Canal (known as Canaletto), who was in London around 1740 , can also be seen in the detailed representation. During his time in Boston, Salmon mainly painted panoramas of harbor scenes, landing sites and coastlines. He worked very detailed and used clear lighting effects, which were later developed as American luminism , especially in the Hudson River School .

During his time in Boston he worked with the future painter Fitz Hugh Lane for William S. Pendleton, who ran the largest lithography company in Boston. Lane himself began to paint oil paintings based on Salmon's model in 1840, and in 1841 was able to exhibit his work Scene at the Sea (whereabouts unknown) in the Boston Athenaeum.
