Robert Frederic Silvercruys (born October 17, 1893 in Tongeren , † 1971 ) was a Belgian diplomat .

Life

Robert Silvercruys was the son of Frantz (François) Silvercruys (1859-1936). He studied at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and the University of Brussels . He was an instructor in Romance Languages at the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1918 , served in the foreign service and became an attaché in Washington, DC In 1921 he was promoted to second class embassy secretary and promoted first class in 1925. From 1925 to 1926 he was the private secretary of Émile Vandervelde . from 1927 to 1931 he was counselor in Washington DC and Beijing , from 1931 to 1936 he was at the embassy in London . From 1937 to 1945 he was the Belgian envoy in Ottawa , in 1944 the legation was upgraded to an embassy. In 1949 Robert Silvercruys negotiated the North Atlantic Treaty . In 1950 Silvercruys and Pierre Ryckmans negotiated the financing of a Belgian nuclear program with the United States Atomic Energy Commission . On September 21, 1953, he married Rosemary Turner McMahon, the widow of Brien McMahon . In 1959 he was retired .
