Robert Stephen Ford

Robert Stephen Ford (* 1958 ) is an American career diplomat and currently serves as the United States Ambassador to Syria . He was previously the US Ambassador to Algeria from 2006 to 2008 .

Life

Ford grew up in Denver and then moved to Maryland . At the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University , he completed his Master of Arts in 1983 . Ford speaks German , Turkish , French and Arabic . Ford is married to diplomat Alison Barkley.

Ford joined the Foreign Service in 1985 and worked in İzmir , Cairo , Algiers and Yaoundé . From 2001 to 2004 Ford served as envoy for the US Mission in Bahrain and from 2004 to 2006 as counselor at the US embassy in Baghdad , where he returned in 2008 as envoy.

Previously, on April 13, 2006, President George W. Bush had nominated him as Ambassador for Algeria . The US Senate confirmed the nomination on May 27. Ford took his oath of office on August 11th.

In 2010, Ford was named US ambassador to Syria after a five-year vacancy. After the Senate had not responded to Ford's nomination, President Obama used a Recess Appointment in December 2010 .

In October 2011 he was brought back to the USA for security reasons.
