Robert Straub (born December 22, 1832 in Baden ; † July 8, 1901 there ) was a liberal Swiss politician and judge . From 1867 to 1868 he represented the canton of Aargau in the Council of States , from 1874 to 1884 he was a member of the National Council , and from 1868 to 1875 he was a member of the government .

biography

Straub graduated from the district school in Muri (where his father was the rector) and from 1849 to 1853 the canton school in Aarau . He then studied law at the Universities of Heidelberg and Zurich . In 1857 he received his patent as a lawyer and practiced in Aarau until he was appointed president of the district court and judge at the cantonal criminal court in 1860. In 1863 he resumed his legal practice.

Straub belonged to the Grand Council , which he presided over in 1867/68 and 1878/79. During his first year as president, the canton parliament appointed him to the Council of States as a representative of the canton of Aargau . In 1868 he was elected to the cantonal government. Initially, he was in charge of the Justice Department, and from 1872 the Education Department. In 1870 he represented Arnold Künzli , the sick head of the finance department , on an interim basis . Despite his origins in the Catholic milieu, Straub stood on the side of the radical liberals during the Kulturkampf and advocated the sovereignty of the state over the church.

In 1874 he was elected to the National Council . The following year, Straub surprisingly resigned as a member of the government because the Grand Council had rejected the increase in teachers' wages that he had asked for. He was active in the National Council until 1884 and continued to work as a lawyer. Bad investments in agriculture and viticulture, guarantees for industrialists and support for relatives weighed heavily on him financially. Until 1900 he was President of the Baden District School Administration.
