Robert Tear
Robert Tear CBE (born March 8, 1939 in Barry , Wales , † March 29, 2011 in London ) was a British opera and oratorio singer ( lyric tenor ). Along with Peter Pears and Philip Langridge, he was considered one of the best British tenors of his time.
Life
He studied singing in Cambridge , where he sang in the King's College choir from 1957 to 1961 . He then became a member of the English Opera Group and sang throughout England and on tours abroad, including the brilliant roles of the Britten repertoire. In 1970 he made his Covent Garden debut at the world premiere of Michael Tippett's The Knot Garden . In addition to the English, Robert Tear also cultivated the Italian and Russian repertoire and was a very popular Mozart interpreter (e.g. as Tamino, Belmonte, Idomeneo).
While Philip Langridge was compared to Nicolai Gedda , Robert Tear's vocal and vocal similarities were attested to with Peter Schreier , who had also started his career as a church choir singer and with whom Tear, in addition to the Mozart roles, also had a passion for sacred singing ( cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach , oratorios by Georg Friedrich Händel ).
