Robert Wenner (industrialist)
Robert Wenner , and Roberto Wenner , (* 10. May 1853 in Pellezzano ; † 17th April 1919 in Naples ) was a Swiss Gross industrial .
Life
Robert Wenner attended the St. Gallen Cantonal School and completed an apprenticeship in the company of his father, Friedrich Albert Wenner , a successful entrepreneur in the southern Italian textile industry . In 1887 he took over the management of the textile factories founded by Johann Jakob Meyer in 1825 in Scafati in Campania . He modernized the company and geared production to the international market. In 1913 he merged the company with the textile industries in Naples and three years later with the Swiss production facilities in Salerno to form the Manifatture Cotoniere Meridionali (MCM). Robert Wenner became the most successful industrialist in southern Italy. In its heyday, the company had 12,000 employees. As a result of nationalism during the Risorgimento , MCM was nationalized in 1918.
In 1881 he married Jeanne Freitag, the daughter of a textile manufacturer.
Honors
For his services to Italy he was awarded the Order of the Crown of Italy (Commander). A street named after him in Salerno and a park in Scafati commemorate him.
